He could be a very good mechanic with an attitude.  He could be a young
hotshot with a lot of potential.  This could be his first offence.  Give him
a chance.  A good manager will recognize those that can be reformed and
those that should be fired.  What makes you think that he is not the former?
What if you were in the mechanics place, needed the job understood the error
of your ways and smartened up?  Wouldn't you deserve a second chance.
