It shouldn't be a problem.  1988 ///M5's came stock with 16x7-1/2" wheels and
225/50-16's; while stock M5's are factory rolled, many have been rolled even
more by competent shops without paint or body repair.  I would guess to fit
225's, you wouldn't need to go anywhere near the outside face of the quarter
panels; the lip edge is all you may need to play with.  Of course this
assumes that your 7-1/2" wide wheels have the proper offset (what that is, I
have no idea).
