The stock (for many of the E30 325 wheels, though not all) 195/60 14 tire
size has worked great on the E30 325 wheels my '72 tii for years.  I did once
pick up a set of 195/65s cheap that turned out to rub quite a bit (on both
fender lips and tie rods, as well as in rear when loaded), as I recall.
 Can't comment on 195/55s though...
