As another datapoint, I average about 20-21 mpg in my 90 525 auto.  I have a ~40
mile roundtrip commute which is 90% highway.  The *best* I have come close to is
~25 mpg on a trip with the cruise set @ 70 mph.  I guess the 28 mpg highway
estimate was calculated @ 60 mph, going downhill, with a tailwind, and the tires
inflated to 50 psi!!!
