I have been hearing noise at times at idle that was clearly coming from my
alternator on 93 352i - didnt really spend a lot of time diagnosing it as it
came and went. Well my original battery gave up the ghost in the heat the
other day - it had plenty of water - but they just have a way of dying in
Florida. Anyway - the car runs much better with a new battery - BMW
replacement is slightly shorter and more powerful unit now than original one
- - not only did the noise stop in the Alternator - probably slowly failing
battery was taxing the unit, but the car is much more responsive i.e. tach
needle shoots from idle to 2000 RPM much faster than with old battery - I
could tell the difference in my garage immediately and also car seems a
little crisper moving off idle on the highway.
Food for thought - talk about over-engineering -did you ever look closely at
the masterpiece ram air cooling system for the Alternator on the 325 - and
consider what little thought went into engine intake air system. Question -
where does all the junk that gets sucked into the Alternator cooling system
end up - anyone ever had one apart yet?
