on 2002's it's easiest to pull the engine and tranny as 1 unit.  since
the two cars are very similar, i would venture that the same is true of
the 320i.  it's much easier to mate up the splines on the clutch w/
the gearbox out of the car.  i once spent half a day trying to get
them to line up on a 2002 w/ the engine in the car!  plus, it's easier
to bolt up the tranny w/ the engine out, too.

the only catch to pulling them together is that you definitely need to
pull the radiator, and you either need a hoist that can go pretty high
or a helper to help lift the tail of the tranny over the fender
(although, in a pinch, i once had to it myself!!).
