1600 Boot Rubbers

When I bought my 1970 1600, the boot rubbers were not in place but were with 
the car.
I recently fitted them and found that I could not then close the boot!
When I removed them again, the boot closed nicely.

My question is, how can I fit the rubbers and get the boot to shut without 
hopefully adjusting the boot position?

I did notice some small cracks in the frame that holds the latch mechanism 
inside the boot, perhaps the latch is moving down, preventing the boot from 
closing with the rubbers installed?
