I recently had the inlet modified by cutting off the restrictor and
just ducting air straight into the airbox via the stock diameter intake
behind the headlight. I don't know about the E24 6-series with the six
cylinder motor, you may need to add an extension from just behind the
headlight to where the intake begins. My local specialist did this for
me and he has done a similar job on his own '89 535i. He needed an
extension built, while mine was still long enough to be ahead of the
cool air shield and take in air via positive pressure area behind the
headlight. I considered a big cone styled intake with the K&N filter
on it to replace the entire airbox, but the only problem is if the
engine is hot or you're idling in traffic on a hot day, all the air
blowing into the engine will be hot air, making performance degrade
unacceptably. With this particular modification, I keep my stock
airbox (with K&N panel filter) and still get a bit of a roar at or near
full throttle from the increased amount of air rushing into the intake.
It may not sound as nice as a cone shaped filter, but I think it's a
pretty effective, and cheaper, solution. Good luck.
