<e28> Warm start problem

I have an '86 535i with a starting problem that intermittently appears.  The
starter turns but the engine won't run.  One time the problem appeared to be
the fuel relay which I replaced and for that time it cured the problem.
Last night the problem happened again.  As a quick fix I tried to replace
the fuel relay to no avail.  The problem appears only when trying to start a
warm engine.  Letting the car sit overnight has always cured it.  (Did I
somehow get union ponies? :)  I have not noticed any strange running
behavior.  The engine runs fine after it starts.  Has anyone experienced
similar problems and how was it resolved?  TIA.
