535 oil leak

Hi. I recently (3 weeks) acquired a very clean and strong 535is. On my first
longer trip yesterday I noticed the catalytic converter to be very hot (
observed after 1 hr 15 min driving to smell hot and put out visible heat
waves in the surroundiong air. Is this normal?  Apparently in conjucntion
with this , the car has developed a rather nasty oil leak, showing up on
both the rear of the vehicle and the floor of the garage. 
Hmmm, sounds like a rear seal, and the clutch was replaced by the former
owner as condition of sale. 
Question: Any help, advice, etc? I have been going to the same BMW mechanic
for 14 years, ( 77 320i, 82 528e) and will certainly have him scope this
out, but could it possible be related to the clutch job?
