<e30> HELP! stranded with electrical problem

hi everyone,

taking a little break, i drove my e30 400 miles to visit some
friends. i get here okay, the car runs smoothly. the day after i
arrive it starts up fine and i drive 3 miles to go for lunch. after
lunch, the car won't start!!! it turns over, but won't "catch". i get
AAA'ed back to the house and start looking for the problem. i've
checked all of the obvious (to me) things and can't find anything
wrong with: plugs, wires, coil, cap&rotor. 

the engine sounds as if it's going to start, but as the rpms go up (to
almost 1k) all of a sudden the engine just shuts off.

what else can i test/check? is the motronic unit easy to check?
