David,
If I was in your place I'd run away from this deal.  Seems to me that the
guy does not want you to buy the car since you had it checked oput by a
mechanic. Did you see the report, or was it "Honest Pat" that told you what
it says.  I've had a few similar experiences in retail sores here in Toronto
and try to stay away from them.  Like one poster said "maybe they do
business differently in China or Taiwan", but now we are here so let's stick
to our business practices.  As soon as I hear things like "selling it for my
brother, friend, neighbour" I know that this deal is bad.  It usually is
what we call here a curb-side dealer.  He pretends to be selling it
privately thus avoiding taxes and warranties, but in reality he does this
for a living.  Kiss your $69 goodbye and move on.
