Philip,
I had a '77 320i when I was in school and rebuilt it as well. Luckily I
have an Uncle that owns a garage and he let me work on my car. My fuel
distributor went south right after the rebuild, probably because it was worn
anyway and removing it to do the rebuild dried it out and let crud get in
it. Anyway, it flooded the engine and screwed up the seating for the nice
new rings--the car burned oil like crazy after that.
My advice is drive the car for as long as you can until you can afford a
newer one and get what you want in that car. Meanwhile, you can still enjoy
the handling and fun in that old 3. I loved mine and some times I still
miss it. I wish I had the money to put the 323 engine in it, oh
well...reality... :-)
