<E36>M42 Engine Recall

After following the thread regarding the M42 engine (318i/is) profile gasket
I decided to pose my own question.  My car is a '93 BMW 318is which is
currently still under warranty (for the next 8,000 mi or so).  If it I have
the problem gasket I would like to have the prolem fixed as soon as
possible.  So, my question is as follows: how can I determine if I have one
of the "problem" engines?  Does the problem affect cars with certain VIN
numbers?
