316?

Howdy,

        I have a friend who is presently spending some time in Germany.
The car he was able to rent is a BMW 316.  What is this?  Is it a car
similar to the compact, or is it similar to our 318i?  Just kinda curious.
I've been trying to get him to buy a *real* (M3, 328is, 540, etc....)
Bimmer for years, and I want to know if he's driving one that will leave a
good impression.  I hope so!
