I had the same crack in my engine pipe on my 320i, that was discovered beause
I thought the cat was fried. I took it to an experienced muffler shop
discovered the crack and welded it and it has been fine ever since. In fact
the crack was causing an exhaust leak and a lost of power.  Total cost
$40.00.

I would purchase the cat as a last resort.....
