MPG gauge

While driving to work this morning, I looked down and discovered
my MPG gauge registering over 40 mpg(pinned to the left). As I
accelerate, it returns to a normal reading but then goes back up.
At Idle it stays to the left.
I know there was something in the digest before with someone
with the same problem. Please send me in the right direction.
