<e28> grinding gears

Lately when I am approaching a stoplight and I downshift into first, my car
grinds 1st gear unless I am going less than about 5-7 mph.  If I attempt to
downshift while moving faster than 5-7 mph it will grind until I slow down
to 5-7 mph (if I hold the shifter into gear).  This all occurs while the
clutch is on the floor (naturally).  My car has had a slow tran. fluid leak
since I've had it, but never severe enough that I've had to add any at all.
(That's low....)  Could it be that low tranny fluid is somehow causing this?
I have been working 90+ hour weeks for the past month and haven't had a
chance to get her on a lift, so I'm feeling out possibilities.  Any input
appreciated....
