Water-Based Paint

It seems that BMW is not the only paint that is water based and 
environmentally friendly.  Today I stopped at the local Mercedes 
dealership to check it out and they said that by the end of the year, 
all of their paint colors will be "water-borne".  The salesman 
recommended having the paint treated with a protectant coating for 
which they charge $400-$500 which will protect it from outside forces 
like those passing pidgeons.  Has anyone had this protectant put on 
their BMW and if so how is it?
