commercial ads

i've been a bit preoccupied with relocating the lists over the past week;
i've missed the grand discussion about commercialization of the list, and
have not yet attempted to catch up.

i've been pondering a policy for some time, actually, and have the rough
outlines of a solution. there is a bmw-digest web page coming, with access
to the digest archives in a much nicer form, and a page for
subscribing/unsubscribing from your web browser, and a more detailed policy
statement than the current brief "welcome" message.

i will be considering implementation of two new pages as part of this suite:

classifieds page
commercial ad page

classifieds will be free to list members, except for obvious commercial
ones. commercial ads will of necessity cost something; what, i don't just
know yet. the advertising deal i've got for some of my web pages (right now,
mostly the race track pages) does not provide an appropriate model for what
we're talking about here. bmw-oriented advertising on bmw-digest pages
should be worth more, because of the very close targeting of advertising to
the readers.

and i would note that i've always told people who bothered to ask me about
using the list to advertise the following:

don't overdue it; once a month to make your self known, keep it short,
tasteful, and discrete

members will _always_ respond better to commercial sorts who are also
perceived as valuble list members who contribute meaningful technical
support and information

finally, the list of email addresses of bmw-digest members is not for sale,
and will never be for sale.

cheers,
  richard
