1.8 liter leaks?

I am about to buy a 1991 318is, new four cylinder engine in the old
style (E30) body.  I really like the car but an indepentdent service
place told me that the engine has an unhappy propensity to leak
coolant out the head gasket, right front corner, accompanied by a
corrosion problem.  Another service place said they've never seen it
and recommended buying the car.  A third (a dealer!) said I should
expect it every 50k miles, worst case.  And $700 to fix it.  Claims
that BMW fixed it somehow in 1993.

Anybody out there with advice?
