     Sounds like the exactly the same symptoms that my friveline had even 
     though I have a 5 speed.  The noise is from a frozen u-joint in the 
     driveshaft.  My rear u-joint, right before the diff. was frozen solid 
     even a hammer couldn't brake it free.  You can't tell if the u-joints 
     are frozen until you pull the driveshaft out complately.  The u-joints 
     are not serviceable on BMWs.  you need to either replace the 
     driveshaft (~$800) or have the u-joints machined out and new 
     servicable u-joints installed and balanced.  There are at least two 
     places in the Roundel mostly in Altanta for some reason.
     
     
     Let me know if you are successful with the microfiche to CDROM 
     transfer.  I have a CDROM burner for Intel and Macintosh interfaces 
     plus the service and parts microfiche for E28 and 745i turbo if you 
     need it.
