I am in the process of replacing the factory AM/FM/WB/Cassette radio (CM5907) in a friend's '89
325i. There is a two wire lead - yellow and white at the radio, red/green and red/grey at the
harness. This connection is labeled "BTRY" on the radio, I first thought it was battery, but I now
believe that BTRY stands for betray.
One wire - the red/grey or white is connected to the instrument lights. The other is the one that is
driving me crazy. It seems to have a low (1.5v) voltage when the car is off, and none when it is
on. With this wire disconnected, the tach, interior lights, trip computer, and glove box light do not
function. If I connect this wire to the battery, the trip computer is on all the time. If I connect it to
the ignition, the interior lights only work with the ignition. I haven't tried ground yet.
I reinstalled the old radio and eveything worked as normal but the owner didn't think this was the
best solution ;)
