The valve which controls how much coolant goes through the heater core does
not have any position between full-on and full-off. The climate control system
cycles the valve on and off as needed to keep the cabin temperature at the
set value. This cycling is inaudible on my 533i with the engine running,
but your car has much less background noise I'm sure.
