Funky Starting

My SO has informed me of an anomaly when starting her '78 530i.

She sez it seems to start easier inn the AM when she turns the heater on,
(or left it on the night before)

When she has it on, it cranks right up and takes off; without it, its slow
to start (turns over fine, tho) and then it stumbles when it does get started.

Any why does the motor "kick" or shudder when you turn it off.  Its not
really like a run on, just like a shudder when you turn the key off.

Any ideas?

BTW - the car has performed flawlessly since the episode with the bad shop.
