Auto Transmission Slipping

   I have a 1979 733i whit an automatic transmission.  Recently, I've been 
   having problem where it shifts fine from 1st to 2nd but won't stay in 3rd.  
   When I get on the freeway, it will only shift in to 3rd if I let off of the 
   accelerator, the second I give it gas again it pops back in to 2nd.  Also 
   slips in reverse to the point where I can barley backup.  I checked the 
   fluid, it was low but when I add fluid it didn't help.
   
   Any suggestions?
