tires and wheels for M6

OK, another tire question. This time it's a little different. I've been
a bmw-list subscriber for a while and haven't seen this one yet.

I have an '87 M6 with the original tires and wheels. The tires are
metric size 240/45 415. I can buy the replacement Michelin tires
through The Tire Rack($178 each. ouch!) via special order but I was
wondering if anyone has experience putting US size tires on these
metric? wheels. 

My other option is to buy new tires *and* wheels and sell the old
wheels. A more costly venture for sure.
