I've had this problem twice with my 528i. First time it was the gas tank
leaking where the vent lines enter the tank around where the filler neck
hose connects to the tank (rust). It didn't leak alot just oozed a little
when the tank was full. The second time, a few years later, the trunk
would absolutely stink of gasoline after filling up. After I changed the
cloth covered vent hoses (I hate those stupid cloth covered German hoses
that you can't check their condition without taking them off) that went
between the vapor canister and the tank, the smell was greatly reduced.
So I bet that one of hoses to the vapor canister is seeping a little bit
of gas vapor through.
