Erratic fuel gauge?

Hi everybody,

I have a -83 520i with 68 000 miles (~110 000 km) on the meter. The car is
in a grate shape and is running just fine but there is a small but annoying
malfunction. The fuel gauge doesn't give the right reading. When the fuel
tank is empty, the fuel gauge indicator shows at the beginning of the reserve
(red area). I'm thinking of removing the fuel level sender unit to check
it out but it seams to be a bit complicated. 

Has anybody on the list done this before? Or does anybody have a clue 
about what the cause of the erratic fuel gauge could be?
