Erik, I think your car qualifies for more than "slightly modified"....

Automatics were introduced on the 2002 in '69.  Only on the carburetted
models.  Not a horrible setup, but it's a much more fun car with a manual.

At least in the Chicago area, 320i's seem to be selling for about $1K less
than a comparable 2002. (both in decent shape)

Also, several of the British classic car mags have had purchase articles
on the 2002 in the past year or two.

For around $2000, you can also find decent 530i's and Bavaria's.  Be careful
with these, though, some maintainance and repair costs can be rather high
on the 6 cylinder cars (as compared to the 4's).  Decent 528i's also
sometimes fall in this range.
