[bmw] Engine gone???

Hi,


1983 bmw 520i,

Cruising down the road, engine cuts out, funny noise trying to start,
noticed what appears to be a timing belt???? At the front of the engine
- inside metal front cover, just in front of rocker cover -  appears to
be loose on cogg.

Engine won't start and acts as if there is no compression.

Is this a timming belt failure?

Or

Something else?

If timing belt, then how hard to fix? and may this have damaged other
areas inside the engine when it broke?
