[bmw] timing belt

A timing BELT is a rubber/fabric belt that must be replaced every 60000 miles. This was used in older BMWs, up through the late 80s for most engines. The E30 325e/i and E28 528e are examples of BMWs that have timing belts.

Your car has a timing CHAIN, which doesn't have a replacement interval for maintenance. There may be a need to replace the chain tensioner if it fails (the chain will begin to get noisy), but the chain itself should last for the life of the engine.

My E34 525iT has a timing chain, and the car has 186,000 on it. There have been no problems with the chain. My former E30 318i was sold with 255,000 miles on it, and it also had a timing chain.

Hi,

      I have a 2000 323i with 62K miles and I've been reading lately
that I should immediately have the timing chain replaced. What do you
folks think? Is there a known issue with timing chains breaking or is this
just preventive maintenance?

Thanks,

- -Mike
