[bmw] E23 failing seat back

Gentlemen
  The electric seat back adjustment/holding mechanism is failing in 
my wife's 85' USA E23 735i.
  Not wanting to "re-invent the wheel", I'm seeking advice form those 
who may have "been there-done that".
  I need to know if the adjustment/holding mechanism for the driver's 
seat back might be repairable, or should I just be looking for 
another seat.
