Only the 1989-90 525i had the single cam engine. In
1991 they went to the double cam and jumped ahead of
the 3 series, which stayed with the single cam until
the E36 came out in 1992.

Both are fine engines in my opinion, and one doesn't
seem any more powerful than the other, although the
double cam gets better gas mileage.  The main
advantage of the double cam is there's no need to
change timing belts.
