[bmw] E39 - how can I check build date

All - I'm trying to find the date my car was built, there are some significant differences apparently with the 97/98 5 series - my car was hit on the driver's side early in it's life and I no longer have the decals on the center post which probably gave me this info... could I get it from the dealer?
