You can still follow the BMW recommended oil change times, and still do your
3k changes. But Your BMW uses synthetic oil. This does not need to be
changed as often. But every 5k for synthetic is still not that costly,
compared to an engine. This is what I recommend. As for what the car may
tell you, it may be closer to 8-15k for changes. MHO is this is to much.
The flush changes are fine, keep it up. Buy a service reset tool for your
oil change resets or just keep track of the changes. But your light will
still need to be reset sometime.
