Re: Speedometer/ABS Dead

The E39 with ABS + T has four sensors, one on each wheel (duh). Anyway. they
are inserted into a hole in the top of the hub and attached by an Allen bolt
through an ear on the sensor. If the assembler isn't careful the portion that
goes into the hub gets hung up and the ear gets broken when he pushes down and
uses his air ratchet. A quick tap at the inspection station sets the sensor
properly and it slowly works its way out over time, resulting in the speedometer
stopping and the ABS light coming on. Cleaning up the sight and replacing the
sensor should result in the everything returning to normal eventually. To
replace the sensor with a new one you have to remove the plastic wheel well
protector (at least in the rear) and unplug it. Pretty easy to do. Part costs about
$90, club price.
