You didn't say if you checked, cleaned and/or replaced the grounding straps. 
In a car of this age they turn green and don't give a solid ground. Had a 
similar problem in an E30 when the engine was R/R'd. One ground was not bolted 
solidly and all the electrics checked out OK.
