[alfa] RE: crankcase vent

Anthony,

Check your dipstick for gunk. If the gunk (oil-water emulsion)is in
your separator it will also show up in the sump. Check your radiator
cap too. If you have a blown head gasket, your may see gunk there too.
If you have gunk, I would stop driving the car and fix it. The vap-sep
canister does get clogged with rust and funk over time and may need
cleaning. In fact, the entire crankcase ventilation system should be
cleaned periodically.

I am a new Alfa mechanic/owner, but have some experience with a blown
head gasket and trying to salvage a blown gasket. One thing I've
learned is that you might as well do it right the first time... Or
you'll be back to re do it soon. Also, this ain't a cheap hobby! Long
on frustration, but very rewarding.

Subject: [alfa] cranckase vent

Dear All,

My crankase vent system is full of gunk that is clogging out my
Oil-Vapour separator. I'm sure this is not normal and suspect a blown
head gasket (otherwise why would there be so muck brown muck?). I would
like to disconnect the crankase hose from the Oil separator and have the
hose just hang there for a while to prevent the gunk to enter the
combustion chamber until I sort things out. I don;t plan great trips
just short hops to test the car now and then.

what are the implications of doing that? (other than environmental of
course).
