[alfa] idle adjustment
Andy - It sounds as if the reference screw gap is adjusted correctly or your
Thermostatic Actuatois not fully extending when the engine is hot. That will
cause the symptoms you describe. As the engine heats up, the little piston
in the TA extends, pushes on a lever in the injection pump internals, and
leans the mixture and lowers the idle to normal (about 700 rpm). A quick TA
check is to heat the car all the way up to operating temperature and
disconnect the long rod from the injection pump throttle lever on the rear
of the pump. Measure the distance between the throttle lever and the
reference screw (the thing with the little plastic anti-tamper cap safety
wired to the pump. The gap with the engine hot should be .019" OR LESS. With
a good TA and a hot engine, the gap will often times be zero. If there's a
big gap, then it's likely the TA is bad or the adjustment screw under the TA
piston needs to be adjusted.
To do a detailed check on the TA, you need to remove it from the car, and
heat the bulb end in water to 175 F and measure the piston protrusion. It
should be 27mm or 29-30 mm depending the the model of the TA.
