[alfa] Re: stuck cylinder head

Ed,
I am assuming you have also removed the timing chain?
That Alfa tool is a half inch thick plate that sets on top of the studs
not the dome nuts. There is a hole in the middle where a threaded rod goes
thru. The rod screws into the spark plug hole on one end and has a nut that
tightens against the plate on the other. Once the rod is inserted in the
spark plug hole, it does not turn and therefore should not pull the spark plug
threads. All the wear and tear is on the nut above the plate.
You may have to make 2 of these tools, one for the front studs and one for
the back ones. And you may have to also use your rope trick in conjunction
with them. Just be careful and don't get carried away with too much force.
A friend of mine recently used a deal like this on a V-6 that was so
stubborn that he had to improvise spacers for the top of the studs and pull
the head completely to the top of the studs with the puller before it finally
came free. There was that much corrosion built up on one of the studs.

Subject: [alfa] stuck cylinder head

I am having a hard time removing the cylinder head from a 74 GTV engine. The
engine is on an engine stand. I have removed the 10 dome nuts and the 2
screws at the front. I have tried rope in two cylinders and a breaker bar on
the pulley bolt. I have tried a 4 ton hydraulic puller between the sump and
the boss for the timing chain adjuster and I have used a copper hammer on a
couple of solid parts of the head, but it will not budge. I assume that
adhesion is between the studs and the holes in the head that they pass
through. They are now soaking in penetrating oil. The AR manual shows a
special puller that appears to screw into a spark plug hole and has a plate
that pushes on the dome nuts. I suppose that I could make one, but I worry
that the threads in the spark plug hole would strip. What should I try next?
