Hi all...
One of the minor details on the Spider is a bit of play in the steering
box. I have the Burman recirculating ball type, not the other with the
adjusting screw on top.
I know about the plate on top with the shims, that adjusts spring
pressure on the ball assembly. Since I don't really know well what's
going on in there.. (never seen a good drawing, or took it apart) I
don't know if one can keep taking out shims till things are tight, (or
you run out first) or do you run into a problem with clearance or some
such? Any advise from the guru's who know these boxes I'd appriciate,
as well as it being a good reference point.
Taken three out so far, play has gone from about 1/4" to less than
1/8th... will keep going unless there's a reason not to...
And it's a nice thing.. has improved the driving feel tremendously.
One of the things that stands out in my 20yr old memories of driving
Alfa's is that wonderful steering... the slightest movement of the wheel
becomes motion, the amount of feel you have of the road and tires.. at
least if the suspension and steering parts are all in good shape!! Just
did a nice backroad drive with the wife this afternoon.. we're both
smiling..
