There's another possibility. My 101 gearbox (essentially the same as the
105) had been fitted at some point by a dreaded previous owner with a
fifth/reverse shift rod that was too short. When fifth gear was
selected, the rod was entirely out of the hole in the front of the case,
and the oil just shot out. Fortunately, it didn't ruin the clutch. It's
worth checking and is a relatively easy fix, assuming that you can
source the longer shift rod.
