Subject: [alfa] Resonator replacement ideas

Hi all..

I am getting a new cat to replace the 27yr old unit that is a rattly,
noisy, dead doornail.. I'm hoping that the new one will improve the
tone of the exhaust, (or at least not contribute so much noise to it!)
as well as clean it up.

But, "for off road use only" ;-) I have a pre 75 dual manifold, a needs
some work set of downpipes to fit, (or might get new) and was wondering
what might go on the other end to connect to the center muffler?

Early cars had a kind of box that I was under the impression, was more
a resonator than muffler.. though I think I saw one cut open once,
about half cavity half muffler like damping. Anyone have experiences
with using straight pipes, or small glasspack things there, and how did
it influence the sound?

That, and a cheap source of a few flanges, and I'll be set for several
kinds of motoring..

----------------------------

Buy a new catalyst for the late 1970's spider / Alfetta. Use the 74 &
older exhaust manifolds. Buy a new 74 head pipe. Cut it off just in front of
the resonator. Cut the flange and exhaust pipe from the front of an old center
exhaust section. Turn the flange around, weld it to the 74 head pipe and it
will bolt to your stock catalyst.
You will have to make up an O2 sensor fitting if your car is so equipped.
 I found a large (12 mm ? ) nut that screwed onto the O2 Sensor. I ground
one side of the nut to match the curve of the exhaust pipe, drilled a hole in
the pipe and welded the nut over the hole.
I did all that on my 82 spider to make it legal. After Oklahoma did away
with smog testing, I just left the Ansa "catalyst test pipe" in place all the
time. The Ansa part is essentially a resonator that replaced the catalyst.
I doubt they are available any longer. I know I have the last one Vick Auto
had in stock in my attic.
For a source of the flanges, I have the local Alfa mechanic save any
center exhaust sections he replaces.
