Terry,

Before following Jeff Greenfield's excellent advice, try spraying some WD-40
or other such lubricant down the opening at the rear of the glass above the
striker mechanism (inside the door cavity).

Use the small tube of the spray can to direct the spray down inside the door
against the striker mechanism and outward towards the outer door handle
"innards". You want to spray the area between the glass and the inside of
the outer door skin at the rear of the door.

The "wiping" surface of the tang to which Jeff refers can work better, with
much less effort and distension, if lubricated periodically.

This is a problem particularly in the winter.
