[alfa] Parts book plate repetition, or not (was: Reading Parts Books)

Beatle Bayly asks why many but not all plates in the car disk parts manuals are repeated in all respects, including the plate number.

The parts books prior to the 1750 have individual plates, followed by one or more pages of parts lists - item number (where applicable), part number, description, quantity, and in some cases application if the parts book covers more than one car model. In these earlier parts books the plates may be on the left or right, with even or odd page numbers. With the 1750 a new format was introduced, in which every parts listing is invariably on the reverse of a plate showing that part. When the parts listings take no more than twenty-five lines, the plate appears once; 26 to 50, twice; 51 to 75, thrice. The plate covering the valve gear, with a different part number for each shim, thus appears once in a pre-1750 parts book, and eight times in the 1750 and later books. Whether one system is more convenient or sensible than the other is a judgment call, but each follows a logical base.
