I'm reluctant to mention this on the Digest again since there's 
theoretically a conflict of interest (I work for the place that sells 
it on the internet, but only because I like the product so much I 
convinced my employer to sell it), but I'll go ahead because at the 
end of the month they may stop carrying it or increase the price (but 
you didn't hear that from me).

My chemical of choice for removing oily, dirty engine grime (and all 
kinds of other messes, from adhesives to blood to ink to tree sap) is 
an environmentally-friendly cleaner/degreaser called Citrol.  You 
concours people may know of better stuff, but don't underestimate 
Citrol until you've seen it in action.  I make some pretty nasty 
messes, and I have yet to see it meet its match.  (The trick is to 
let it sit for a few minutes if it doesn't loosen the gunk 
immediately.)
