Subject: [alfa] spider seat bottom cushion removal?

Hey,

I'm sitting here scratching my head and looking at how to remove the
seat bottom from a 91 spider seat. I remember seeing a post about the
removal of the cushion from the frame itself, but it's been a
frustrating search looking for it again. If anyone could help out with
a hint as to how it's done, I'd be very grateful.

Eugene,
All spider seat bottoms are held in with four tabs - two in front and two
in back. You know, put tab A in slot B. The problem is on the 91 spider
there are pop rivets through the tabs. You need a 6 mm Allen wrench to remove
the four bolts that hold the seat to the floor. Make note of the four metal
slide stops that fit under the Allen bolts. Also note any spacers between the
floor and the seat rails.
Once the seat is out of the car, you can drill out the pop rivets,
straighten the tabs and remove the seat bottom. I tried to drill the rivets out
with the seat in the car with no success, even using an angle drill. There just
is not enough room to drill.
Do not rivet the tabs when you put the seat bottom back. The tabs will
hold the seat bottom just fine. In fact, gravity will hold the seat bottom
even with no tabs.

While the seat bottom is out, inspect the bottom seat pan for stress
cracks. There are two nuts spot welded to the sheet metal of the seat pan. Those
hold the front of the seat slider rails to the bottom of the seat. I have
had to weld the seat bottoms on both of my 91 spiders. I added metal straps to
reinforce the stock sheet metal at the same time.
