[alfa] RE: alfa-digest V9 #1048

How've you been, Ralph. It's been a while.

I saw in another reply that someone mentioned using a 14mm stubby wrench. I
have one that you're welcome to if necessary. I haven't taken a close look
at this piece, but I was thinking that it might be easier to pull the plenum
& use a deep 14mm socket & a long extension to get to it. I could be wrong
because I can't exactly recall what it looks like.

In regard to the pressure relief valve, I don't think that's what the valve
in the oil filter is for. In most cars I know of, the pressure relief
valve, which regulates oil pressure, is located in the oil pump. The valve
in the oil filter is a bypass valve that allows oil to continue to circulate
in the engine in the event that the filter becomes clogged. The routing of
most engines' oil is such that all of it passes from the pump directly
through the oil filter before going anywhere else so that if the oil filter
were to become clogged, the engine would be starved for oil if there were no
bypass valve. Of course, Alfas can be different from most other cars in
some regards, this maybe one of them. I'm not completely sure.

Subject: [alfa] V^ oil pressure sender

The oil pressure sender on my 2.5 Milano(75) may be going bad (I hope that
is the problem!!). Typically I have seen 20 psi at idle & 55+ at speed
(>3000 rpm). Been that way for 45,000 miles in my ownership (now 118,000
on car). Suddenly I get zero at idle (when hot) and around 50 psi at >3000
rpm (15 - 50 at lower rpm). Based on all other Alfa's I've had or have, I
would consider this fairly typical but............!
Two questions;

1. I've got a new sender unit and it looks like a PITA to R&R from between
the V and close to firewall. Before i start modifying wrenches does anyone
have any good tips for the R&R?
2. Anyone installed a mechanical gauge and what fittings are required - I
seem to remember its an odd thread & not typically available in US (how
about UK?). Thought this might help clarify if another problem or not>

Any suggestions, tips etc welcome.
TIA
Have a safe & good 2004

ps: Another random thought; Did an oil/filter change at beginning of
month. Could pressure relief valve in filter (OEM Alfa) have gone bad &
lead to low oil pressure?
