[alfa] charging system
Hi,
10 volts huh? Verified with a digital MM (multi meter)?
I doubt the VR is the problem. VR's keep the voltage from being TOO high,
not low. I would check the grounding (esp. engine to chasis), and cables and
the battery. If it starts OK than the battery is probably fine, but old
batteries will internally short from sulfation buildup-- mostly due to under
charging, and this could be loading the alternator down (some specualation
here).
If you can "full field" the stator winding you can verify if the Alt is
working...it should output 16-18 V if a Bosch unit, although some doemestic
cars will run 70V or more....so be sure you follow the manual as not to fry
anything.
Also check the "blue" wire going to the Alt as this supplies V to the Stator
(coils that surround the rotor assy.) wich allows the Alt to produce
current/voltage. Since you are getting 10V it sounds like it's working, as a
Alt will not produce voltage w/o the Stator being magnetically charged via
voltage.
If the wires are OK...verify via voltage drop or Ohm test (V drop is
better), than i'm guessing the Alt is internally shorted, perhaps between
stator and housing (common failure)
MMMmmm... one more thing pull the V regulator and make sure the brushes are
at least 50% or more, replace once other aspects are verified to avoid money
wasting.
Good luck!
Gary
